Founded in 1968 by a diverse group of artists, community activists, and philanthropists, The Studio Museum in Harlem is internationally known for its catalytic role in promoting the work of artists of African descent. The Studio Museum’s Archives contain records of over fifty years of exhibitions, events, the Museum’s Artist-in-Residence program, and other historic images and documentation. Hauser & Wirth Institute’s $360,000 grant supports the employment of archivists and fellows to organize and digitize these materials over the course of three years. As materials are processed and digitized they will be added to the Museum’s Digital Archives research platform, complementing the Museum’s continued commitment to public access, community participation, and arts education in Harlem and beyond. A preliminary assessment of the archives and high-level organization was accomplished through a recent grant from the Henry Luce Foundation.
